Certaldo Alto, a small fascinating village, of medieval origin, is situated on the famous Chianti Hill, in the province of Florence. It is famous also as Boccaccio’s birthplace.
Here you can find and visit:
- Boccaccio's House, where the poet lived and composed his masterpiece "Il Decamerone". The building includes a museum and a library devoted to the life and complete work of the great writer www.casaboccaccio.it
- The church and cloister of the Saints Jacopo and Filippo, which houses the tomb of the great Certaldese writer, as well as sculptures, frescoes and bas-reliefs in glazed terracotta of Robbian school.-
- The Sacred Art Museum with a notable collection of paintings, tables and sculptures coming from various churches of the neighbouring areas, among which a n extraordinary wooden crucifix dating back to the second half of the 13th century, representing a "Triunphans Cristo" with his eyes wide open, a most original example of Italian medieval sculpture.
- The Pretorian Palace, the ancient seat of the Florentine Vicariate and centre of great power. Its front and inside courtyard are enriched with numerous marble and terracotta escutcheons representing the various Vicars who, under the dominion of the Florentine Medici Family, had in turn the control over the surrounding territory. Next to the Palace, in the Church of the Saints Tommaso and Prospero, you can admire the most precious work of art: the famous "Tabernacolo dei Giustiziati" (1464/65) frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli.

Our holiday house “Il Vecchio Forno” is situated in the very central Via Boccaccio, in a red-brick building dating back to 1200, a few steps from the Pretorian Palace; it was the ancient seat of Certaldo Alto bakery, now transformed into a comfortable house with old style furniture.
The old part of the village, on top the hill, is linked to the modern trade and shopping centre by a funicular, as well as by two roads; the railway and highway allow to reach easily the major cultural cites in Tuscany, Florence, Siena, Pisa, Volterra and San Gimignano.
